Summit Healthcare Regional Medical Center
Home Health celebrates six months in Springerville
Home Health provides care beyond hospitalization to assist
patients in their recovery process and makes it possible to
shorten inpatient hospital stays. Length of home care
service can be short term or for the chronic long term care
patient. Home care is often needed in situations such as
recent childbirth, recent hospitalization (including
same-day surgeries), multiple illnesses, new diagnoses
requiring teaching and support, terminal illness, urinary or
bowel problems, open wounds, feeding tubes, fractures,
strokes, frequent IV antibiotic administration, need for
continued IV therapy, pain requiring active management, and
respiratory problems. Prevention of further illness or
injury is also an important part of Home Health services in
order to maintain a higher quality of life for the patient.
A referral or order is made by your doctor, hospital,
nursing home, insurance company, or other patient service
agency. After the referral is made, an RN or a therapist
will come to your home to do a complete evaluation. A plan
of treatment is then developed with your doctor and home
care is scheduled.
For patients who carry Medicare and meet their criteria,
100% of all skilled care is covered. Many insurance
companies have home care benefits available to their
subscribers. Eligibility and payment programs vary with
coverage. All AHCCCS and ALT plans have home and
community-based coverage for their members. Other
arrangements can be made for patients who do not meet the
payment criteria for the above programs. The staff member
doing the initial evaluation at the first visit will inform
you of any financial responsibility you may have.
Summit Healthcare Home Health’s service area includes Show Low,
Pinetop-Lakeside, Snowflake, Taylor, Vernon, Concho, St.
Johns, Springerville, Eagar, Alpine, Heber, Overgaard, and
McNary. Home Health acts as the intermediator between the
doctor and the patient. The Home Health nurses are
responsible for making sound, independent decisions
regarding their patients. The home environment allows for a
more relaxed manner of creating and building the
nurse-patient relationship. The Home Health staff is made up
of RNs, CNA's, and social workers who visit patient homes to
provide care beyond hospitalization. Staff may have mud up
to their ankles, have dogs chewing on their pant legs, or be
lost on a dirt road 20 miles from the hospital, standing on
their cars to get cellular phone reception out in the
boonies. But they always have a car full of supplies
(including dog biscuits) for any possible scenario that
could arise.
